Landscape projects can combine design, site preparation, planting, hardscape, and follow-up care. Decide which results matter most before comparing proposals so the plans and materials are easier to evaluate.

Describe how you want to use the space

Think about how people move through the yard, which areas need shade or privacy, how much ongoing maintenance you want, and which existing features should remain. Photos and a simple sketch can help communicate priorities.

  • Rank the work you want now versus items that can wait for a later phase.
  • Point out drainage concerns, slopes, trees, utilities, and areas that stay wet or dry.
  • Share preferences for plants, materials, paths, seating, or lighting.

Review the plan and installation details

Ask what the design includes and whether the proposal covers site preparation, materials, installation, haul-away, and care instructions. If the work is phased, have each phase and its dependencies listed so you can compare like for like.

  • Confirm plant names, quantities, sizes, and substitutions in writing.
  • Ask whether irrigation, edging, lighting, or hardscape is included or separate.
  • Discuss how weather delays and changes to the plan will be handled.

Plan for care after installation

New plantings and landscape features may need different care than the established yard. Ask for clear maintenance guidance, what is covered after installation, and who to contact if a specified material or plant is unavailable.

  • Ask which maintenance tasks are expected during the first weeks.
  • Confirm whether ongoing lawn or garden care is part of the project or a separate service.

Questions to ask before hiring

What should a landscape installation estimate include?

Look for the planned work, materials and quantities, site preparation, installation, cleanup, schedule assumptions, and any work listed as excluded. Ask for unclear items to be spelled out.

Can landscape work be completed in phases?

Often the plan can be divided into phases, but sequence matters. Ask the designer or installer which work should happen first and how later work may affect earlier choices.
